Keswick Peace and Human Rights Group (KPHR) and Money for Madagascar (Charity No: 1001421) invite you to join us for this talk.
On this occasion we will remember Wendy Sougnez who died earlier this year and was a member of KPHR and a lifelong campaigner for peace and human rights.
Madagascar is best known to many of us as a tropical island unique in its flora and fauna. It is certainly this and a special holiday destination. But it is also a nation of extreme poverty, rapid deforestation, illegal export of precious resources and a population explosion.
Hear about the challenges facing the island’s people, the history of Quakers on the island and the inspiring way that Malagasy people work towards human rights for all.
There will be a crafts’ stall with cards, calendars, small handicrafts and information about alternative gifts.
A collection will be taken during the evening to support grassroots organisations in Madagascar through Money for Madagascar.

As you may be aware, the world-famous Great North Run has launched
a bid to become the first running event to boast a participant from every
country in the world.
The half-marathon,
which will be staged for the 36th time on September 11, is already the biggest
of its kind in the world, with 57,000 accepted entrants from more than 100,000
applicants.
The Great Run Company
aim to recruit at least one runner born in every member state of the United
Nations – a total of 193 countries – to take part.
The event is
televised worldwide and is viewed by millions of people, and this campaign has
so far attracted interest from all over the world. As I’m sure you’ll be aware,
there are numerous media and PR opportunities that can come out of this, with
the ability to have stories published, so do join in the fun and help to
promote the work of MfM!

Songs for Madagascar! [Nov 2016]
Film Screening
A special film screening is taking place at Turner Sims in Southampton in November 2016 - which is of great interest to us at MfM.
The screening promises to offer an 'intimate journey' across the island of Madagascar. It's directed by the award-winning Cesar Paes, who works in close collaboration with the artists and researchers at the University of Southampton,
'Songs For Madagascar is a documentary that closely follows the creative work of a group of musicians and shows their encounters with local communities. Through their music they engage with the protection of the endangered regions of Madagascar and raise awareness worldwide about their country.'
Following the screening there will be a Q&A with Director Cesar Paes, Producer Marie-Clemence Paes and Professor Ulrike Meinhof from the University of Southampton.

Independence Day Celebration! [June 2016]
Association of Malagasy in the UK
This Independence Day event run by the newly reformed Association of Malagasy in the UK will feature cocktails, the singing of the Malagasy national anthem, a buffet dinner, and of course a party. Numbers are limited to 175 so tickets are first come first served.

Charlie the Cello! [May-June 2016]
The Lancaster Millennium Choir
The Lancaster Millennium Choir is a long term supporter of Akany Avoko and Money for Madagascar.
This year, they are working on a new collaborative community project with funding support from the Arts Council Grants for the Arts. The project is called Charlie the Cello!
The Story:
A young girl (Alice) loses her cello (Charlie). Charlie, who luckily sprouts arms and legs, has various adventures until he is brought to the Albert Hall by a kindly old lady, where he is reunited with Alice in dramatic circumstances.
Workshops:
Andy Whitfield the conductor and composer will go into eight local schools; together with Graham Lowe, artist; and Maja Bugge, cellist; and work on Charlie and Alice's adventures. They will tell stories, draw and learn 'The Song' that persuades Alice to be brave. This all leads to a grand finale of a performance in Summer 2016. The Choir will sing the story, the cello will feature and Graham's illustrations will be thrown up behind all the action. The children will join in the Song of Valour and there will be an audience of parents and of course the Choir's friends, family and followers.

Cultural Heritage Programme: Madagascar! [June 2016]

This afternoon event is open to all with any interest in Madagascar. It is organised by Prof Donna Kurtz, who recently visited the country. Amongst other speakers, author of the Bradt Madagascar guidebooks, Daniel Austin, will talk about the first settlers in Madagascar, how we know that they originated in Asia, and when it is thought that they arrived on the island.

“I have decided to raise money for this particular charity because it seeks to create step-ups, as oppose to handouts to some very poor people. Poverty leads to people resorting to desperate means to make a living, whether that is deforesting an area to farm or hunt animals for bush meat or live trade. I have never been to Madagascar, but I hear the animals that live there are some of the most diverse and fascinating in the world. I hope to have a child one day and I don't really want them to grow up in a world where such animals only exist on the internet, in a book or in the zoo. I will be happy if the money I raise will help some desperate people lead sustainable livelihoods. Please give as much or as little as you can spare.”

I have never been to Madagascar, but I hear the animals that live there are some of the most diverse and fascinating in the world. I hope to have a child one day and I don't really want them to grow up in a world where such animals only exist on the internet, in a book or in the zoo. I will be happy if the money I raise will help some desperate people lead sustainable livelihoods. Please give as much or as little as you can spare.”
